Our History

HMT was founded in 1985 with a simple yet powerful vision: to improve lives by providing high-quality healthcare and support for those in need.

From our beginnings, we've been driven by a mission to alleviate physical and mental illnesses while promoting good health.

Over the decades, we have grown into a trusted provider of care, from our hospitals to our care homes, always staying true to our core values.

1985 - Our beginning

HMT's journey began when the ownership of the 47-bed St Hugh's Hospital in Cleethorpes was transferred from the Sisters of the Order of St Joseph of Peace to HMT. This marked the start of our commitment to carrying forward the legacy of compassionate care laid down by religious orders, with a focus on making healthcare accessible for all.

1988 - Expanding Our Reach

Just a few years later, we extended our reach to Wales, taking over the management of Sancta Maria Hospital in Swansea from the Ursulines of Jesus. This acquisition cemented HMT's role as a growing healthcare provider, now serving communities across the UK.

1994 - A New Era for St Hugh's

In 1994, we celebrated the opening of a brand-new, 32 bed St Hugh's Hospital at its current site in Grimsby. This facility allowed us to enhance our services and cater to more patients.

2005 - A Focus on Elderly Care

As our mission evolved, we saw a growing need for high-quality elderly care. In 2005, HMT opened Marie Louise House in Romsey, a 46-bed care home designed to provide tailored, compassionate care to elderly residents.

2007 - Coloma Court Opens

Following the success of Marie Louise House, we continued to expand our care home services. In 2007, Coloma Court, a 62-bed, purpose build care home in Bromley, Kent, opened its doors.

2015 - 2016 - Modernising for the Future

Innovation and improvement have always been at the heart of hMT. In 2015, we upgraded St Hugh's Hospital with two advanced Laminar Flow theatres to ensure our patients had access to the latest surgical technology. We also modernised patient rooms and waiting areas at this time.

2019 - Building the Future in Swansea

In 2019, construction began on a brand-new, state-of-the-art HMT Sancta Maria Hospital in Swansea's SA1 waterfront district.

2020 - A Global Challenge

When the global pandemic struck, HMT stepped up. St Hugh's Hospital rapidly transformed into a 'Covid Secure' facility, offering essential elective and cancer services to the NHS while keeping non-covid patients safe.

2021 - The New Sancta Maria Hospital

On the 15th February 2021, we proudly opened our new Sancta Maria Hospital premises. The facility is equipped with cutting-edge technology and designed with patient comfort and safety in mind.

2024 - Pioneering Dementia Care

Our most recent expansion sees the opening of HMT Norden House, a bespoke, 64-bed care home in West Sussex, specialising in dementia care. This facility is designed to set new standards in the care of those living with dementia, emphasising dignity, compassion and innovation.

2024 - Further Growth

In 2024, we also welcomed St Quentin Care Homes in Newcastle-Under-Lyme into the HMT fold, further extending our commitment to high-quality care across the UK.
